In order to illustrate what makes our CBD nano emulsion a superior product, we have provided a brief overview of the science behind the formulation.
What is an Emulsion?
An emulsion is a dispersion of two or more liquids that are not mixable in their natural state. It’s most commonly found when combining oil-based and water-based ingredients.
What is a CBD Nano Emulsion?
A CBD nano emulsion is a type of emulsion in which the CBD oil droplet size has been reduced to below 200 nanometers. Nano emulsions become optically translucent when droplet sizes are less than 100 nanometers .
Our NABA CBD nano emulsion has droplet sizes of less than 25 nanometers which is why it is completely clear and transparent.
The efficacy of a CBD nano emulsion is highly dependent on CBD oil droplet size:
- A larger CBD oil droplet is more difficult for the body to absorb. Emulsions with large CBD oil droplets have a visible haze and cloudiness that is hard to see through.
- A smaller CBD oil droplet is easier for the body to absorb. Emulsions with small CBD oil droplets have little to no visible haze or cloudiness and appear clear.
How is a CBD Nano Emulsion made?
A CBD nano emulsion is created by using kinetic energy to disperse the CBD oil droplets into water at a nano particle size. Emulsifying agents are then used to stabilize these nano sized CBD oil droplets in the water.
How is our NABA CBD Nano Emulsion made?
Our multi step process first begins with blending our proprietary stabilizing formula. This formula consists of carefully selected and thoroughly researched ingredients specifically designed to:
- stabilize and preserve the emulsion
- enhance the uptake of CBD to the blood stream
- reduce the oxidation and degradation of CBD
Once our proprietary stabilizing formula has been produced, we then heat the mixture to a precise temperature while applying our special homogenization process. We then slowly incorporate the CBD into the mixture while heating and agitation continues for a prescribed amount of time.
After the CBD mixture has been fully solubilized, we then add the remaining ingredients to the mixture. It is at this point where we then implement our emulsification process which is carefully monitored for an extended period of time.
Once the entire protocol has been completed, the end result is a nano emulsion that is:
- completely clear and transparent
- kinetically stable resisting separation
- resistant to oxidation and degradation
- highly bioavailable for efficient uptake
- rapidly absorbed into the blood stream
Why are Nano Emulsions so effective for cannabidiol (CBD)?
Nano emulsions are an excellent delivery system for compounds that are hydrophobic (resist mixing with water) . Cannabinoids are a great example of this: In their natural state, cannabinoids extracted from cannabis or hemp are hydrophobic and will only mix with oil based ingredients. The human body has a difficult time absorbing these hydrophobic cannabinoids because the human body is mostly comprised of water.
When consumed orally, standard CBD oil is processed through the liver and gastrointestinal tract. This causes significant losses of active ingredient uptake as well as delayed absorption into the blood stream. This is known as the first pass effect: the amount of active ingredient lost during the process of absorption from the liver and gastrointestinal tract.
Studies have found the oral bioavailability of standard oil based CBD to be as low as 6% . This means if 100mg of a standard oil based CBD product is consumed, only 6mg of CBD may be absorbed into systemic circulation while the other 94mg is lost through the digestive system.
Nano emulsions have been found to greatly increase the bioavailability of cannabinoids and absorption time. Due to the incredibly small particle size, nano emulsions can immediately pass through cellular membrane walls directly into the blood stream. This rapid absorption eliminates the first pass effect through bypassing the liver and gastrointestinal tract entirely.
In one study, a CBD nano emulsion improved the bioavailability by about 65% compared to a standard oil based CBD product. The same study also noted a dramatic decrease in the time to reach maximum CBD concentration in the blood stream. The CBD nano emulsion was absorbed nearly four (4) times faster than the standard oil based CBD .
